Am I the only one who hates Missy Haggins?
Sorry if I open a can of worms but was Missy Haggins hired just to taint the show’s quality? It seems like ever since she came on board and began writing the majority of the episodes, the episodes have deteriorated in terms of quality. Correct me if I’m wrong. But I’m hoping to start some sort of Impeach Missy campaign. Who’s with me?

Count me out. I think everyone is entitled to their opinions but, IMHO, yours is wrong. Missy Haggins has written some gems—“Forget Me Nots,” “Love Connection,” “The Girl of His Schemes,” as well as “Riley,” “Ten Year Reunion,” and of course, the last episode, “Deja Who?” Don’t underestimate her. I met her when I went to the production office during my visit to Los Angeles and she is a sweetheart.

Uh, thanks, you’ve proved my point. Those were horrible episodes—especially “The Girl of His Schemes.” She doesn’t have the humor and wit that a lot of the other writers interweave in their teleplays. Look at “Car 54, Get Away From Me.” It sounded like a very stupid premise but it worked because it was rich with layered character traits and sight gags. Now THAT was a memorable episode. Her concepts seem good on paper (a.k.a. “Ten Year Reunion”) but then they end up completely flat and forgettable by the last act. She seems not to know where she is going when she sits down and writes and thus we are left with a weekly episode that is just pointless. I like writers who contribute to the arc of the story and season three has just been a mess, if you ask me.

Well, Cookie, let me clarify something. Season three has been different from the first two seasons but that is just because it has grown more sophisticated and mature.

The reason the show became so popular with a cult following is because of the cheesiness and lack of taking itself seriously, as in the first two seasons. Missy is changing that, bit by bit, making the series more like a soap opera. Frankly, if I wanted to watch a soap, I would watch a soap. Henry Adams is supposed to be good, clean fun, not overdramatic and sappy, or I wouldn’t be tuning in.

This happens on all shows. They try to gel and manifest into a fixed formula. The first season always feels like a trial period, with growing pains to boot. By the second or third season, they already have a set outline and just plug the story into it. Along the way, they like to jumble and shift around character’s predictability and give us more background on the ones we think we know so well. Look at “X-Files,” in the early seasons, Mulder was a believer and Scully was a skeptic; near the end, they swapped roles.

Re: Am I the only one who hates Missy Haggins?
We’re not talking about “The X-Files,” that series was brilliant at having episodes stripped straight from an ongoing arc and others that were completely non-canonical. And don’t even try to compare Missy Haggins to Chris Carter. Carter had a sheer goal in what he was trying to depict throughout a season; Missy seems to make it up as she goes. Riley just disappeared for a few episodes and then suddenly, BAM, he’s back again and we’re supposed to care about his purpose in the series.

Cookie, let me clarify how a television writing staff works—they all have a hand in coming up with the entire season and then specific writers are assigned to each episode. None of the episodes are non-canonical because they all are predetermined before the writers sit down and begin writing. There is something new learned in each episode, even if the little tidbit is not what the plot is centered around. So if you don’t like where Missy is taking a story, that’s probably not her decision but just what she was told to do.

Carlton, please don’t insult my intellect. I know how television staff writing works; I’ve been a TV fanatic since I was a young’un. My point is Missy is now the head of the staff and she comes up with the storylines that other people embellish on.

It is a completely collaborative effort and not one person can be singled out and blamed.

Re: Am I the only one who hates Missy Haggins?
That’s not true. There was even an article in the TV Guide where Missy admitted to coming up with the idea of “Riley”. Even if others approved it, it was her idea and thus why she wrote the third season premiere which, in my opinion, sucked. There have been some good episodes this season but they can’t be credited to Missy but to the writers that remain from the beginning. I wonder how long it is going to be before TAOHA is in jeopardy of cancellation. The ratings have been down so I must not be alone in my feelings.
